Competition Day 10

The day started off with a trip on the underground to Hyde Park.  Dustin, James, and I made it just in time.  Hyde Park is known for some good history of the church in England.  They rebuilt the church fairly recently.  There were a lot of visitors there along with members that live nearby.  Three wards meet in the building currently.

Race walk was going on all morning.  There was a 20k and 50k.  The women's 50k was added just 3 weeks ago.  So, three women quickly got added to the US team.  Only 7 women total competed in that.  It sounds like it was added due to threats of a lawsuit since the men have a 50k and women haven't in the past.  The race didn't go well for the US.  One was disqualified for not walking.  Another didn't finish.  And the other was 4th.  I did have fun visiting with a couple of them before and after the races though.

Later on at the meet, I took the photo of the medical staff.  Dustin is the head of medical.  He does a great job with that and everyone seems to get along very well with him.

The evening had the women's 800 final, women's 5k, and 4x400s.  Ajee Wilson held on to 3rd in the 800 after leading a fast first lap.  Our women didn't do as well as we hoped in the 5k.  However, the women's 4x400 was incredible.  They won by 6 seconds.  Allyson Felix opened up a huge lead on the second leg.  Everyone outdid whomever they were matched up with though.  The men fell to second with 100m to go and got silver to Trinidad and Tobago.  That snapped the US team's 9 consecutive winning streak in the 4x400.

I had a lot of laughs with Andy that I've worked with on this trip.  I hope I get to do this again sometime.  We always enjoy it so much even with the limited sleep.  It was so much fun coming back to England and stirring up memories of visiting England when I was young. I even got to the point where I could find my was around on runs without worrying too much about whether I would get lost.

We got back to the hotel and finished packing.  I got to bed around 12:00, then up at 3:30 to get ready to go.  I'm on the final leg of the trip now, from Chicago to SLC.  It will be wonderful to get home!  I've missed being with my family.

I never did find a scone with clotted cream and jam even though I was checking everywhere when I was out of the hotel.  Then, before getting on the plane, I found a shop that had scones.  Airport food is a much more reasonable price in England than America, so I asked for a scone.  She asked if I would like clotted cream and jam with it.  Yea!!  It tasted very good.  Not quite as good as at the bed and breakfast that I remember from many years ago, but it was definitely worth it.
